Lloyd Construction Set To Build On Record-Breaking Year

Three-quarters of the way through 2024, the year is shaping up to the biggest ever for Lloyd Construction.

“This will be a record year, between our work for Lloyd Companies as well as third-party projects,” said Mike Dill, executive vice president of construction.

While you might associate Lloyd Construction with building projects developed by Lloyd such as The Steel District in Sioux Falls and Block 5 in Rapid City, the team also takes on a wide variety of work for public and private-sector clients.

For instance, in June Lloyd Construction wrapped up more than a year-long project at the Great Plains Zoo to deliver a new home for lions and meerkats.

“Our team did a really nice job, and the city and team at the zoo were great to work with,” Dill said. “It was a very specialized project that involved working with subcontractors nationwide, so we were happy to deliver that to the zoo and the community. Most of our team that worked on it has young kids, so it was fun for them to walk through the zoo with their families and show them what they helped build.”

That also will be the case at Jacobson Plaza and the River Greenway in downtown Sioux Falls, which Lloyd is building for the city of Sioux Falls.
“The ice ribbon at Jacobson Plaza is also a very unique project, so we’ve been coordinating with experts from around the country on that,” Dill said. “There’s an abundance of activity happening at that site now. Even the buildings have some unique features, so it’s a very intricate project.”

The goal is to have the project substantially complete by late this year, although you’ll have to wait for next season to full enjoy features like the new spray park and accessible playground.

Adjacent to that project and along the Big Sioux River, work is on schedule for the River Greenway behind the Steel District development“The low-head dam work there and walkway are on track to be done this fall,” Dill said. “With our record rains earlier this summer, we already could see how that dam is going to function and really create a nicer environment.”

That project, which also includes the adjacent Lloyd Landing plaza and dog park, is on schedule to be done later this fall.
Elsewhere around the state, Lloyd is making solid progress on a 14,000-square-foot addition to Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services in Yankton.

“We have another nine months left on it and it’s going well,” Dill said. “It will more than double in size when it’s done.”

In the retail sector, Lloyd Construction is working on a 167,000-square-foot Fleet Farm store in Bismarck, N.D. which is scheduled to be done early next year.
“This is our third Fleet Farm, in addition to Sioux Falls and Cedar Rapids, so it’s nice to build on that relationship,” Dill said.

“Additionally, we have been approved to construct tenant built-outs for Starbucks, so we’ve started one of those in Brookings.”

Despite the workload, Lloyd Construction has additional capacity, he said.

“We’re able to take on additional projects,” Dill said. “We can look at anything and everything as businesses consider their upcoming construction needs.”
