1972 Grants Recognize Deserving Nonprofits – With One More Round Of Awards This Year

Inside Lloyd

As some nonprofits are putting Lloyd Companies’ 1972 grant dollars to use, others have a chance to apply for them once more this year.
Lloyd began this philanthropic program in recognition of its 50th anniversary – honoring its founding in 1972 with awards of $1,972 to nonprofits chosen through nominations considered by the Lloyd team.

In the anniversary year, 2022, Lloyd. set aside $50,000 for the program and distributed 28 checks to nonprofits – exceeding the budget a bit with so many outstanding nominations.

“The 1972 Award has been an enjoyable way for us to involve our employees in a portion of our budgeted charitable giving. It has allowed us to learn about numerous non-profits and engage our team in the process,” said Mary Lloyd-Huber, family business manager.

The award returned for 2024, and this year will give out 26 awards. The 501©(3) organizations supported provide essential services such as education, nourishment, shelter, and health care to the communities served by Lloyd.

Emily’s Hope, a nonprofit founded by Angela Kennecke in memory of her daughter, Emily Groth, is one organization that’s received an award. It supported the organization’s mission of removing the stigma of substance use disorder through awareness, education and prevention, while removing financial barriers for treatment and recovery.
“Craig Lloyd has truly transformed Sioux Falls with his vision and generosity since founding Lloyd in 1972,” Kennecke said.

“He is not only an exceptional leader but also a humble and kind individual who consistently gives back to the community. We are grateful for the recent donation of $1,972 to Emily’s Hope, which will be used to further our mission to end the overdose and drug epidemic. Lloyd has supported our work from the start, and their ongoing commitment means so much to us and the families we serve.”

The Foster Network has received two 1972 grants “and each time the donation has made a major impact on our ability to continue serving foster families and children in our region,” board member Bridget Bennett said.
“Because of the generous philanthropy of companies like Lloyd, our organization is able to provide tangible support like clothing, new shoes and school supplies to children who come into foster care with nothing but the clothes on their backs. We could not serve these children without businesses like Lloyd partnering with us in serving children who really need the entire community to come together and support them.”

Nominations for the fourth quarter are due by Dec. 3. Lloyd will select seven organizations to win $1,972 each, and recipients will be announced Dec. 19 at 9 a.m.

A group of Lloyd employees, known as the Culture Crew, reviews all applications – typically more than 100 submittals. Then, it’s narrowed to a top 10 and all employees are able to vote, with the top six or seven ultimately selected.
“The most enjoyable nominations to read are those that include a short story about how the services have benefited you or the community,” Lloyd-Huber said.

“While mission statements are important, the stories are powerful and truly illustrate how the mission is being put into action.”
