With Savvy Approach To Construction, Expanded Behavioral Health Center Opens On Schedule To Help Those In crisis
When Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services set out to expand its facility for those facing mental health and substance abuse crises, there was an important list of needs.
The facility in Yankton, S.D. needed to be safe, highly functional and welcoming.
The multi-faceted project also had to be delivered without disrupting the existing building.
Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services turned to Lloyd Construction — a trusted partner with a proven track record in delivering complex, mission-driven projects on time and on budget.
The expanded Yankton campus offers an alternative to hospital ERs, jails and detox centers, consolidating all services into one state-of-the-art location. Patients from 14 counties in southeast South Dakota now have access to modern crisis care, therapy and recovery resources under one roof.
“We were limited in what we could do,” said Dr. Thomas Stanage, executive director. “Now we have everything on one floor. It’s an impressive building – and facilities do matter. The people really are important, but the place they work is too.”
When the project first went to bid, Lloyd came in as the lowest bidder, but the plan was over budget. Instead of walking away, Lloyd worked with the design team to reconfigure the scope while protecting the client’s vision.
“They went out for rebid, got far more responses, and we were selected to build the project,” said Mike Dill, Lloyd’s executive vice president of construction. “We made sure their goals were met within budget.”
The project required building alongside a fully operational assisted living facility. Lloyd addressed this by fencing the entire property for safety and security, maintaining open communication with staff to adapt to daily operational needs and coordinating closely with subcontractors to avoid disrupting patient care.
The center moved its inpatient program into the new facility without missing a single day of service because of these measures.
From offices to clinical spaces, inpatient quarters and a pharmacy, Lloyd delivered a facility designed for behavioral health’s unique requirements. Crisis and inpatient capacity increased from 29 to 40 beds, enhancing the center’s ability to serve more individuals in need.
“We built with strict construction and life safety standards in mind,” Dill said. “That’s where our experience really matters.”
The two-year build was completed on time and on budget with no major disruptions to ongoing patient care, while enhancing capacity for crisis stabilization and residential treatment.
The project marks the second successful collaboration between Lloyd and Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services — and it reinforces Lloyd’s mission of improving quality of life in the communities it serves.
“The experience with Lloyd was very, very positive,” Stanage said. “Our onsite superintendent was very good to work with and they did a good job making it a very smooth process that allowed us to continue to provide the care we do.”
