From East To West, Lloyd Construction Tackles Projects Statewide And Beyond

From retailers to restaurants, from a Black Hills bank to the banks of the Big Sioux River, Lloyd Construction teams are building memorable projects across South Dakota and beyond.

“While we support a number of developments from our parent company Lloyd Companies, we also take on a huge range of projects for other clients in both the public and private sectors,” said Jerry Fromm, president of construction at Lloyd.

This year’s projects build on a strong year for Lloyd Construction in 2025.

Some work will continue into this year from last year: Jacobson Plaza, which expects to resume work this month, should wrap up by mid-year, Fromm said.
“The park, playground and splash pad all will open this spring,” he said. “Interior work on the warming house is complete. There’s some mechanical work happening on the ice ribbon and splash pad. It’s been a very unique project and we worked with some very specialized contractors on it.”

Lloyd also cut the ribbon late last fall on the latest phase of the River Greenway, which includes the Lloyd Landing plaza and dog park, but there’s some work that will wrap up this year.
“We got about 90 percent complete in 2024 and still have work to do in the river on the lowhead dam,” Fromm said. “We’re anticipate it will be done by third quarter.”

Jacobson Plaza and the River Greenway are the latest park-related projects for Lloyd, which also completed the lion and meerkat exhibit at the Great Plains Zoo last year.

“We delivered on time and have had positive feedback from the zoo on it,” Fromm said. “It’s another unique project, but it was a fun one for our team because of the impact it has on the community.”
Other projects underway in Sioux Falls include the restaurant buildout for Jack Rose Social Club at The Steel District and multiple apartments, including the Atlas at the Sanford Sports Complex and the One2 in downtown Sioux Falls, which just moved in residents and will open Egg on a Roll later this year.
Elsewhere across South Dakota and beyond, Lloyd is tacking a range of other projects.

Block 5 is wrapping up in downtown Rapid City, bringing a Hyatt Place hotel, loft apartments and retail to the community this spring and summer.
In Huron, Lloyd Construction started a project on THE SHED, the new home for Open Class Sheep during the annual State Fair, which also will serve as a multi-use facility for other livestock and equine events during non-fair time. It’s a 40,000-square-foot facility that includes an education center, mezzanine, show ring and 30-bay wash rack, with the ability to accommodate 1,000 head of sheep.

“We started that after the State Fair last year and we’ll turn it over this summer prior to the State Fair,” Fromm said.

Lloyd also is underway with a $23 million new building for Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services in Yankton, which is scheduled to be done this summer, as well as a multiphase project in Rock Valley, Iowa, to bring multifamily and single-family housing to the community following last year’s devastating floods.

In North Dakota, Lloyd is finishing up a new Fleet Farm location in Bismarck, and in the Black Hills work is underway on a new ambulance facility for Hill City and a new branch for Sundance State Bank in Spearfish.
“Right now we’re actively pursuing projects that could start in 2025 or beyond in 2026,” Fromm said.

Lloyd Construction’s special projects division also is a growing part of the business and able to take on smaller projects generally with a budget of $2 million or less.

“These are things like a Starbucks, a strip mall built, a small clinic, projects that generally take 12 weeks or less,” Fromm said. “We’ve seen very good client satisfaction for this team.”
